Building Awareness: A Look into Substance Use and our Youth

| FreeStilly Valley Health Connections and Arlington Public Schools are partnering together to host a community conversation about substance use and our youth. The goal is to bring awareness to parents, educators, and community members about what the current substance use trends are, and why they should be concerned about the increase in fentanyl-related overdoses.
What: Featured speakers from Arlington Public Schools and the Snohomish County Health Department will share information about substance abuse trends in our local youth, followed by two breakout sessions. Local organizations will be attending to share information and resources they offer for youth and their families.
Where: In person at Weston High School, 4407 172nd St NE – Arlington
When: Wednesday, October 11, 2023. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. Pizza and salad will be offered to registered attendees. The featured presentation will start at 6 p.m., followed by two breakout sessions at 7:00 p.m. and 7:35 p.m.
Details: Join us for an interactive awareness event for parents, teachers, and community members at Weston High School. This free event will take a closer look at current substance use trends, youth behavior, and tips on how to have tough conversations with teens.
The breakout sessions will be led by Arlington Public Schools, Arlington Police Department, Snohomish County Human Services Department, Snohomish County Health Department, and the Women & Family Wellness Studio. The breakout session topics are:
- Arlington Public Schools: Understand how illegal substance use at school is addressed and the prevention education programs provided to students.
- Arlington Police Department: Hear from law enforcement on trends they are seeing with youth.
- SnoCo Human Services Department: Narcan training and opioid education.
- SnoCo Health Department: Understand youth vaping and cannabis use trends, devices, and health concerns.
- Women & Family Wellness Studio: Tips and guidance on how to have tough conversations with teens.
In addition to the presentation, the following local organizations will have resource tables at the event: Center for Justice Social Work; Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County; Stilly Valley Youth Dynamics; Volunteers of America/Arlington Community Resource Center; Sno-Isle Library-Lakewood/Smokey Point and Arlington; and the Providence Intervention Center for Assault and Abuse (PICAA).
